White Belt:  -  Beginner

  • Beginner form is Kicho  -  Learn basic stances, blocks and strikes.

  • Learn terms, school rules and etiquette.

  • Learn basic kicks.

Yellow Belt  -  8th Gup

  • First form is Palgwe IL Jahng  (Heaven and Light)  -  Learn several new blocks and strikes.

  • Learn yellow belt strikes and kicks including basic back leg and switch foot kicks.

  • Learn to string two kicks together into basic kicking combinations.

  • Gain exposure to self defenses (one block and one strike).

First Degree Green Belt  -  7th Gup

  • Second form is Palgwe EE Jahng  (Cheerfulness and Happiness)  -  Learn new combinations of blocks, strikes and kicks.

  • Learn green belt strikes and kicks including front leg kicks.

  • Learn to string three kicks together into intermediate kicking combinations.

  • Self Defenses are expanded to include one block and two strikes.

2nd Degree Green Belt  -  6th Gup

  • Third form is Palgwe Sam Jahng (Fire)  -  Learn new combinations of known blocks, strikes and kicks.

  • Begin to work on jump kicks.  Use the back leg for lift prior to executing a jump front, jump roundhouse and jump sliding side kick.

  • Work on improving upon first degree green belt kicks, kicking combinations and self defenses.

1st Degree Blue Belt  -  5th Gup

  • Fourth form is Palgwe Sa Jahng (Thunder)  -  This form is very unique compared to the previous three forms. New stances, blocks and strikes combine with tempo changes and directional movements that are familiar yet fresh.

  • Learn blue belt strikes plus add jumps or spins to previous kicking techniques. 

  • Kicking combinations are now intermediate to advanced;  Learn to string three kicks together with many being jump kicks.

  • Self defenses are once again expanded and now include one block, multiple strikes/kicks, grabs and/or take downs.

2nd Degree Blue Belt  -  4th Gup

  • Fifth form is Palgwe O Jahng (Wind)  -  This form combines well known techniques, intended to be executed with power, with a new stance requiring increased balance to create a form that raises the bar as far as difficulty is concerned.

  • Work on improving upon first degree blue belt kicks, kicking combinations and self defenses.

1st Degree Red Belt  -  3rd Gup

  • Sixth form is Palgwe Yook Jahng (Water)  -  This form combines tempo changes, a leap into a new stance and a new block with newer techniques to create a challenging form.

  • Learn red belt strikes and kicks, most of which are double kicks.  These kicks require increased balance and technical ability to perform correctly.

  • Kicking combinations are advanced;  Learn three and four kick combinations requiring increased balance and technique.  Many of the kicks are either jump or spin kicks.

  • Self defenses increase in difficulty and now include blocks against multiple strikes combined with multiple strikes/kicks, grabs and/or take downs.

2nd Degree Red Belt  -  2nd Gup

  • Seventh form is Palgwe Chil Jahng (Summit of a Mountain, Highest Point)  -  Several new blocks are creatively combined with existing stances to create challenging movements.  Maintain concentration or risk transitioning into a different form.

  • Work on improving upon first degree red belt kicks, kicking combinations and self defenses.

  • Prepare for perseverance test (Mental strength and physical conditioning test; Optional for ages over 40 yrs.).

3rd Degree Red Belt  -  1st Gup

  • Eighth form is Palgwe Pal Jahng (Earth)  -  This form requires increased power and snap to perform correctly.  Maintain good balance throughout the many off-angle turns and movements if you hope to win with this form on tournament day.

  • Prepare for your black belt test.  Review and perfect everything.  Black belt tests are all inclusive.

1st Degree Black Belt  -  School Black Belt

  • 1st Degree Black Belt form is Koryo.  Koryo is an ancient term for Korea.

  • 6 months to 1 year to learn eight TaeGeuk forms and prepare to break your brick.  1st Dan Kukkiwon certification is on the line.

Kukkiwon Certified 1st Degree Black Belt - 1st Dan (1st Poom if under 16)
